ABOUT DR. WHEELER
Dr. Jason A. Wheeler practices psychotherapy and psychoanalysis in Manhattan, New York. His professional qualification is as a New York State Licensed Clinical Psychologist (NYS License Number 016873). He is a member of the International Psychoanalytic Association, the American Psychoanalytic Association, and the Psychoanalytic Association of New York.
He was born and raised in England. He has Bachelor’s (Psychology) and Master’s (Philosophy) degrees from British universities, and earned his M.A. in Psychology and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The New School for Social Research in New York City. He is a graduate in Adult Psychoanalysis of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Education affiliated with NYU School of Medicine.
During his Ph.D. training he worked at several teaching hospitals in Manhattan (Beth Israel), Brooklyn, and the Bronx. He has worked with the full range of psychiatric and psychological problems, and has worked with children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. He currently specializes in the treatment of adults (including late teens/young adults). He has worked extensively with diverse groups and is GLBTQ aware and friendly, and currently teaches the Sexuality and Gender course at his professional Institute. His first specialty - helping people with severe interpersonal and relationship problems - was developed during five years as a Supervising Psychologist at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan, where he learned and practiced Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) as part of a DBT clinical team.
As well as his work as a full-time therapist, Dr. Wheeler is active in his professional community, helping to train other therapists, writing for professional journals, and presenting at local and national meetings. He is on the faculty of NYU School of Medicine's psychoanalytic Institute (PANY) and is Associate Director of its Consultation and Treatment Service. Dr. Wheeler also serves on the editorial boards of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly and The International Journal of Psychoanalysis.
